Saint Monica School,
formerly Saint Michael School, formed as a result of the merger of St.
Michael and St. Thomas More Parishes in July of 1995.
The school building was
built in 1950. The School Sisters of Notre Dame operated the school with
Sister Clement Marie as the first principal. The Packer Mansion on the
corner of Front & Market Streets served as the convent. A December 1965
fire severely damaged the convent and in 1967 it was razed to become the
school playground. Property was then purchased on Front Street to serve as
the new convent.
In 1988 the final classes
were taught by the Sisters of Notre Dame with Sister Marie Carl being the
last principal from a religious order. The following fall semester began
with the first lay principal, Miss Kathleen Voit, and an all lay faculty.
St. Michael School became
St. Monica School in July of 1995 when St. Michael Parish and St. Thomas
More Parish merged. Mary Reinhard was the principal at the time. Father
William Haviland was appointed pastor.
Currently, Mrs. Susan
Bickhart is the administrator. She along with seven faculty members are
alumni of St. Michael School. Father Haviland is still the pastor.
