Pork Sandwich Sale

When: Saturday, July 19
Time:    11:00 a.m.  until sandwiches are sold out
Where: Selinsgrove Wal-Mart
Cost:    $3.00 per sandwich (includes chips)
                Cole slaw is additional at $0.50 per container
Proceeds benefits Saint Monica's  PTC

Congratulations to Christa Beveridge for winning the Knights of Columbus Poster Contest at the state level.
Her poster is moving on to nationals to be judged at the end of the month. Good luck Christa!!!

Congratulations to our PJAS winners at the state competition held at Penn State University -
 1st  award - Courtney Conrad
 2nd award - Annie Stewart, Diane Tran, and Emily Shovlin.

Special Congratulations to 6th grader Billy Stewart for receiving a State Award with High Honors presented by Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth. He was presented with this award on Saturday May 3, 2008.

 

 Gas Card Raffle Winners: $100 gas card winner was Chad Leitzel and the two $50 gas card winners were Sherry Crissman and the DeFazio family.  Congratulations!

PJAS: On Saturday February 23 the following students competed in the regional science competition of the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science receiving various awards... All 1st awards have the opportunity to present their projects at the state competition in May at Penn State University.

Emily Kate, grade 7,  is the school winner for the Geo Bee Contest determined on January 14th. She will represent the school at the diocesan Geo Bee on March 11th.  Good luck Emily Kate!!!
     Congratulations also go to Nikole Boyle, grade 5, for being the runner-up.

5th ANNUAL COOKIE WALK! -
Thank you to all who supported the Cookie Walk in some way. It was a huge success!!!  The combination of cookie sales, 50/50 drawing, and the rosaries & video sales generated $1120.00 profit.

 GIVING CRADLE - The 8th grade class in conjunction with Birthright of Sunbury is sponsoring a "Giving Cradle". You may donate unwrapped baby items to the cradle in the church or bring your items to school.  Also, if you would like to make a monetary donation, each classroom has a special container in which to place your monies. On December 21st at the 9:00 mass a $250.00 check was presented to Birthright along with baby items.

GERTRUDE HAWK FUNDRAISER: a great big THANK YOU to not only our school families but also our parish families as well for making this fundraiser so successful. Our profit was approximately $2,300.00

Congratulations... to Emma Lewis, grade 3, and Matthew Rohrbach, grade 6, for winning the Knights of Columbus Scholarship Award by writing a winning essay.

Breakfast with Santa: on Saturday December 8th members of the Student Council / Builders Club helped the Kiwanis of Sunbury serve breakfast to many community families. See photos.

PE class held at the Sunbury Youth and Community Ice Skating Rink: on December 5th grades 5 - 8 enjoyed a special PE class learning to skate. Thank you to all who made this possible! See photos.

 Bucknell University Visit: on Tuesday Nov. 27th students in grades Kindergarten through fourth grade visited Bucknell University while the students in grades five through eight visited on Thursday Nov. 29th. We were treated to a guided tour of the greenhouse. Students were able to see and touch a variety of plant species. The other part of the visit included a visit to the planetarium. Students had the opportunity to view the sun through a 120 year old telescope donated to the university by William Bucknell. The students also participated in a scavenger hunt. Other students created comets made of Styrofoam or dry ice. Students learned of the discovery of Holmes Comet which is presently visible in the night sky with binoculars.

Our school celebrated "Read Across America Day" as part of the national Young Readers Program on Nov. 13th. Each grade had a special reader who entertained them with their favorite story or excerpt. Our special readers included former St. Monica principal Mr. Ted Andrewlevich, Dr. Jessica DeFazio-Pagana, Mr. Bill Unger, librarian Mrs. Snyder, Ms. LuAnn Rebuck and Mrs. Melissa Fisher from the CSIU, and parents/grandparents Mrs. Gina Bortz, Mrs. Debbie Lose, Mrs. Mary Tiffin, Mrs. Paula Greco, Mrs. Ann Moran, Mrs. Theresa Oreskovich, and Mrs. Nancy Shipman. Thank you to all who made this time so entertaining!!!

Students learned about the ancient sport of falconry from Master Falconer Cheri Heimbach of Lewisburg, PA. Ms. Heimbach shared facts and fallacies about birds of prey and their role in the environment. In addition, Ms. Heimbach brought three of her beautiful hawks to demonstratte. The program was very informative and entertaining! A special thank you to Mrs. Moran who arranged for this special presentation. See photos.

On Nov. 12 our 3rd grade students celebrated Veteran's Day by honoring our veterans at the American Legion. They joined other 3rd grade students from Beck Elementary in the singing of "I'll Remember You".

During Fire Prevention Week in October, volunteer fireman discussed fire safety with the students. All students were then able to see fire trucks close up and learn about how they work. First grade teacher, Mr. Tom Bickle enjoyed a view of the city from the bucket of the hook and ladder truck. See photos.
